Cameo, carved shell.
Information * Loose gemstones * Jewelry links
Cameos appeared around the time of Alexander the Great, when portraits were used as seals. The designs were broadened when the Romans later adopted the cameo. It's popularity decreased in the Middle Ages, but later rose during the Renaissance period when more exquisite cameos enhanced fashions. As the Victorian Period emerged, shell cameos became popular as Queen Victoria expressed that sentimental jewels, such as the cameo, were her favorite.
